1. John 500:1 (NIV)
Hello, I am a shepherd and I will tell you my story of Jesus’ birth, because I was there. I was in the field with my flock of sheep. Fredrick and I were sitting on the cool damp grass. The air was brisk and the sky was starry. Bethlehem was a little ways away. I had no intentions on heading to the town because it was crowded with many people. Caesar Augustus made a decree that all the world must travel to their home town to be registered for taxes. I focused back on Fredrick again because he was chewing on my coat. Then a bright light appeared in the sky, almost blinding. It was alarming I got up and started to back away in fear. Then an angel of the Lord arose and said, “Fear not for I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you this day is born this day in the City of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign to you, you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths lying in a manger.” Then multitude of heavenly beings began singing, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace with whom he is pleased.” I started my journey to Bethlehem. It was a short one, I was right outside in the fields of the quaint town. When I entered, the streets were bustling with frantic people rushing to find a place in an inn or a relatives house. Near the middle of the city was a stable made out of a small cave. I entered it. It was just tall enough where a horse’s head could brush the roof. It had an awful smell of manure and left over food for the animals. It was warmer in the stable than outside with all the animals’ body heat. I took another step in then another. The hay crunched under my feet. The animals were unusually quiet, there was the occasional snort or neigh, however not to noisy. Fredrick was very tense and walked close to my legs. He kept silent. In the middle of the stable was a manger and right beside it was a woman and a man. They introduced themselves and each told me their story of their acquaintances with the angels and what God’s instructions were to them. The woman told me Gabriel the angel came to her and told her she would conceive the son of God. The man told me that when he heard about this, he was surprised and wanted to divorce her, but an angel came to him in a dream and told him that it was the Holy Spirit working through her and he should marry her. Their names were Mary and Joseph, and their little baby boy, Jesus. He was the finest boy I’ve ever seen. He had beautiful eyes and I immediately bowed down and praised him because of what the angels had made known to me. There was a savior that was going to save me from my wretched sins. He would be a Wonderful Councilor. A Prince of Peace. The Most High. Immanuel. As I left the stable and returned to my flock, I made sure all of Bethlehem would know of this baby boy. I praised and glorified God as I passed through the town on my way to the fields. I arrived to my home and I knew that I would always remember this amazing and wonderful experience. The sheep had a feeling of what happened and they were the loudest flock I ever heard till morning. A few years later, I was sheering Fredrick, he put up quite a fight and I noticed some men off in the distance. They looked like weary travelers, it was night and their were stars everywhere, even a bright star right over the town of Bethlehem. I walked over to them and Fredrick trotting close behind me with his half sheered wool. The travelers introduced themselves, they told me they were wise men and they told King Herod of Jerusalem about their discovery and they too were looking to worship the Savior. The wise men told me of the star that shone bright over Bethlehem and their gifts to give to the Savior, gold, frankincense, and myrrh. I told them the name of the savior, Jesus, and that he was a little boy. I could see the looks on their faces, but the wise men didn’t want to admit they were surprised. Then they left to the City of David in search of the boy. A few days later, the men came back and told me about their experience. When the men saw the baby, they immediately bowed down and praised Jesus just as I did. Mary and Joseph were surprised with such gifts. They also told me that they had a dream not to return to Herod and go home by a different route. The king had something else in mind than glorifying Jesus. King Herod was going to kill him. I was deeply troubled for the family but I knew God had a plan for them. And that’s my story of Jesus’ birth. Now I can share with everyone my story because I was there.
